This weekend on Today’s Homeowner TV show, my family’s new condo at the beach is being featured! And by my family, I mean my parents’ condo that I’m hoping they’ll let me visit. 🙂
It will be episode 2 of a 2-part series. Aka, the episode with all of the beauty shots! But I’m giving you a sneak peek at the before and afters right here! For all of the nitty gritty details, head over to TodaysHomeowner.com to see where you can watch it in your area!
The condo was very dated, but of course owning a construction company means that doesn’t keep you from purchasing it! What’s funny about real estate in Orange Beach, Alabama where the condo is located is that the furnishings come with it! Even down to the utensils in the kitchen!

But my mom didn’t let that stop her from updating nearly everything in the place, including flooring, cabinet doors, beds, tables, and shower curtains. I can’t blame her though, she has great taste!
Here’s the Living Room After:
The cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms weren’t in bad shape, they just weren’t very 2016.
And the appliances had certainly seen better days. Just look at the rust on the fridge!
But instead of ripping the cabinets down to the walls, they decided to just replace the doors with a more modern look. So Mom helped take them all off.
They then painted the cabinet boxes the same color that the new doors were getting in the cabinet shop (Dusty Road by Benjamin Moore). And the old countertops got an upgrade with a beautiful, light-colored granite. And behold!
Can’t say I’d mind waking up to coffee brewing in that kitchen!
The bathrooms got the same cabinet treatment as well as a fresh coat of paint, new faucets and light fixtures, and the same vinyl plank flooring as the other living areas.

The 3 bedrooms got fresh new carpet, new bedspreads, new headboards and TVs mounted on the walls.

To help recover some of the costs of all of her upgrades, Mom was able to sell a lot of the older furniture through a local consignment shop. They even came out to pick the stuff up!
Of course she probably spent most of her earnings before leaving the shop! She claims they had really good deals on artificial plants…
Since my parents plan to rent the condo in a few months, these upgrades are sure to be attractive to someone looking at the rental listing online. It might help them choose between this condo and another. Maybe I’ll get the family discount when Mary Helen is ready to play in the sand…How does “complimentary” sound, Mom? 😉
I almost forgot to mention, Mary Helen and I helped with the decoration phase of the renovation, so you can see us at the end of the episode! Babies make for great TV!
Comment below with any questions about details of the facelift and I’ll do my best to help you out!
Thanks for Checking In! ~ Chelsea

We love watching the show and when the condo redo was airing we knew that it must be a local unit. Yep Orange Beach AL and we live in Foley just minutes up the road. After both of us working on the beach for over 15 years you just know your beaches .. Can’t miss them beautiful white sandy beaches. Would love to know where you got your cabinet doors

Hi Martha! The cabinet doors were made by a local cabinet shop in Mobile, Alabama, Quality Cabinets. George has been working with Dad’s construction company’s projects for well over 20 years! ~ Chelsea

Good morning Chelsea! I watch your show every Saturday morning and I love it. I loved the Condo remodel. I have a Condo in San Destin, so I loved watching the transformation in the Condo, before and after. It was beautiful! I am interested to know about the wood flooring that was used in the Condo. I need to re-do every floor in my Condo. I wasn’t sure how durable wood floors would be with all the water, sand and moisture that goes along with beach living. Could you please give me some information and good advice. Again, love your show! Thanks!

Hi Gayla! The flooring installed was not wood at all but a luxury plank-style vinyl. But you wouldn’t know it by looking at it! It truly does look great in person and the install was very simple from what I hear. The tiles are re-positionable. And vinyl is VERY durable against beachside wear and tear like sand and moisture! Here’s what was used in “Acacia Cinnabar” with FasTak: http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/luxury-vinyl/luxe-plank.asp#browse-collection Hope this helps! ~ Chelsea

We have those same awful “before” cabinets in our Auburn condo’s kitchen and bathrooms. I’d just about talked myself into living with them until I saw how beautiful the “after” is in your family’s condo. Now I need new doors, paint, and crown moulding…..

Kitchen looks great! We have those same cabinets in our OBA condo and are thinking of refacing. Is there a reason you didn’t use larger doors/drawers during the refacing to make the gaps around the edges smaller? I’m thinking of doing a 1/4″ gap all around. Just curious if I’m missing something! Thanks!

Hi Debra! I consulted with the contractor (my Dad), and it seems the stiles are unusually large. So in order for the doors to be able to open all of the way, we had to keep them the same size as the original doors. (If we had made them larger, the hinge would have been further away from the edge of the cabinet door and then that part of the door would butt into the stile before it was open all of the way.) Hope that’s not confusing and answers your question! It’s kind of hard to explain in writing! ~ Chelsea

I am obsessed with this renovation. I love how you didn’t get all new cabinets but just fixed up the existing ones to make the kitchen and bathroom look more modern. When I was buying a condo to fix up, the one thing that made the biggest difference for me was great natural light. I got new windows installed in the unit and it made all the difference. Everything looked more clean and modern.
