How to Make a Small Room Look Larger

How I Made My Bathroom Look Bigger

Inexpensive Way to Increase Room Size
A few inexpensive changes can make a small room in your house, like a bathroom, look and feel bigger without tearing down walls!??

Open Shelving

Yes, I know what you’re thinking…where am I supposed to store my stuff if all I have is a few shelves? Well, I’d say seriously consider what you’re storing and how you use it. For me, most of the stuff stored in my large medicine cabinet was not used everyday. So, I was able to relocate it to a nearby closet. And that meant, adios light-blocking cabinet!

Natural Wood Open Shelves in Bathroom

Don’t overlook the fact act you can easily store everyday items like deodorant, moisturizer, etc in baskets on your shelves. You’ll still get that open feel but with the hidden storage we all want.

Light, Bright Walls

Keeping the wall color in a small room light and bright gives your walls depth, making them feel like they keep going. I chose this color 6 years ago when I was renovating and still love it! It’s a very true tan/beige that just blends in and let’s the accessories do the talking. (It’s Natural Linen from Glidden.)

Add Trendy Accessories

Another trick to keep your room feeling larger is to update your typical bathroom accessories with on-trend, stylish options. They’ll drawn the eye in, distracting from the small nature of the room.? I went with a more transitional-style towel bar and toilet paper holder in the current trend of gold (or champagne bronze as the manufacturer calls it.)

Hang Curtains High

This trick works for window curtains and shower curtains alike. Hanging them at or near the ceiling, draws the eye up and elongates the room. I like to buy 96″ curtains for my 8′ ceilings and then wash them in hot water and dry on high heat to shrink them to just the right size. Ideally, they should barely graze the floor.

And there you have it! A few ways to ‘trick’ your guests and yourself into thinking a small room, bathroom or not, is larger than it actually is!

Dear Chelsea, love the washer behind the door knob tip. I paid big bucks, for plates to go in my kitchen behind my cabinet knobs. I painted my cabinets a few years back, and that area always gets warn. To avoid the big job of repainting the cabinets,I purchased the plates to go behind the knobs, i still had to paint them to match my knobs. Love the show , I tape it every week so I can view it and save it. Fellow DIY’ER

Hey Karen, great idea to use washers to cover that worn area around knobs! It’s always the first to wear off! Thanks for watching and following along! ~Chelsea

We stocked up on decorations, moonpies and apparel for the kiddos this weekend. Now bring on the king cake!👑🎂💜💛
