DIY Velvet Channel Tufted Headboard

This retro-inspired headboard with faux channel tufts covered in lush velvet is an easy DIY with basic tools and materials. But the result is anything but basic!

What to Buy

Cutting Plywood

As mentioned in the video above (don’t forget to hit that play button!), my finished headboard is 60″ tall by 72″ wide. That’s approximately the size of a king-sized headboard. But it’s also the size of the giant windows in Clara’s nursery. My intention with this headboard was to cover one window to eliminate the need for curtains but still block out any light from that one window for good baby sleep.

To make a headboard this size without buying multiple pieces of plywood, I got a little crafty with my planning. See the template below to see how I made my cuts in order to maximize a 4’x8′ sheet of plywood.

The first cut, where the #1 is at, is 60″ from the short side of the plywood. Then each cut after that is 8″ wide, the width of the ‘channel’ planks.
