How I Reused an Old Wood Window

Repurposing a Window and Planter Box

Wooden Window Hanging on Outside of Garage
Looking for an inexpensive way to add some character to the outside of your home or garage? That’s exactly what I did with an old wood window and leftover planter box.

Find the Right Trash

The best part about this project? 100% free! I already had this hand-me-down metal wall hanging on the outside of my garage that faces our backyard.

But I was ready to change things up. You may remember an earlier rendition of my dining room had this old wooden window hanging in it. It was removed from one of my dad’s construction company‘s jobs several years ago. And one man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure.

It hung there for a while before I changed up the decor in there and then most recently added board and batten-style molding.

Pair It With More Trash

Then I built a new planter box for my front porch and had the old one sitting around. So I put two and two together to come up with my faux window with planter box.

Use Screws to Attach

After quickly power washing the planter box because it was old and moldy, I laid the window face up and attached the planter box directly to the front of it. I was able to use the existing holes from where the planter box was originally attached to my porch.

Then I used the existing screws that the metal decor used to hang from to hang the window. And the cherry on top of my free cake is the begonias are also leftover from my front porch!!

Just can’t beat a free, quick, and easy project that changes up a space in or around your home! Now I need to find a new home for the metal decor. Hmm…the back deck is looking a little sparse… (**Update March 2019-I built a giant wooden initial for our back deck. Click to watch the how-to video!)
